[Raleigh spends most of his time at his brother's coffee shop, either working behind the counter or studying (because for some reason it's okay that Yancy never went to school, opened up a coffee place instead but Raleigh's getting his fucking BA or else). There's a handful of regulars who come through and Mako Mori is one of them. She's also in a lot of Raleigh's classes because she's an economics major with a focus in Japanese (which makes sense because she's from Japan so it's kinda dumb that she has to take classes about the language but there you go) and he's a linguistics major.
He also spends most of his time thinking about how amazing she is. How she corrects his pronunciations without any judgement. How her forehead wrinkles when she's thinking hard about something. How she can smile at him and his stomach does flip flops. How she seems stoic and calm but he's seen her rant about something before and she's so passionate about everything. How he has the biggest crush on her ever and how he doesn't even have her phone number. How Yancy's noticed the mooning and won't shut up about it.
(you two make me sick. It's like watching a puppy lust over a fire hydrant. Do us all a favor and ask her out before you start humping her leg)
But Raleigh's ignored him and thrown things at his head because he can't ask her out. They're friends, alright, and besides she'd never go out with him because he's a kid from Alaska who wears a lot of sweaters even in hot weather and she's going to change the world and also, did he mention that she's perfect? Because she is.
It's finals and he's claimed a table for his own at the shop, even though Yancy could use the help because he's not the only frantic, caffeine starved college kid around but Yancy actually kicked him out from behind the counter and threatened him with a spoon and he doesn't want to know what Yancy has planned for him and that spoon, so Raleigh pulls out his books and sends half murderous, half concerned looks over at his brother every once in a while.
It's starting to slow down a little when the door opens and in comes Mako and his hand is up and waving at her before he can stop it (it's possessed or something) and it's too late now. She's coming towards him and his table and he's pushing the other chair out with his foot (and oh my God, all of his limbs are betraying him).]
[ university isn't quite how mako expected it to be. then again, most of her expectations came from her aunt tamsin's anecdotes and she was... wild. to say the least. even the stories that had nothing to do with partying and sports and kissing pretty girls had an edge to them that mako doesn't really find exists in her university experience. she goes to class, she does her work, she makes a couple friends and finds a coffee shop to frequent. life is surprisingly calm and sedate when it's not finals week.
sadly, this week is finals week, so she's feeling a little harried. she's got three papers due, two written exams, an oral exam, and a presentation all to be done by the end of the week. the three papers are mostly done because mako's the kind of student who starts things early so as not to rush. ( her roommate kind of hates her for it. ) but the presentation is a group project and those all need to die in a fire. but it'll be fine in the long run. her grades won't suffer too much if she refuses to pull her partners' weight in addition to her own. and she's about to go to the coffee shop where she may see raleigh.
raleigh, her best friend and secret crush. she's not sure when, exactly, his atrocious pronunciation of japanese and the way he smiles up at her like she's the best thing since sliced bread started making her heart race. all she knows is that it does. and that when he tilts his head to the side with a thoroughly confused look on his face, there is a part of her that wants to kiss him silly.
when he waves at her, she gives him a small smile and nods. ] Let me get my coffee. [ it takes possibly a shorter time than it should to get her coffee, given the state of the line. but yancy likes her so it makes an odd sort of sense that he would play favorites.
she sits across from raleigh and drops her bag to the tile floor. the sound it makes is almost louder than the din of the crowd which goes to show just how heavy all her books are. ]
Do you need to practice for the oral exam on Wednesday? [ the look she gives him says, this is not a question, we are practicing, your pronunciation is horrible and you know it. ]
[Raleigh doesn't answer right away, as he's staring at Yancy over her head because his brother is waving a spoon in his direction and mouthing ask her out or it could be you're a goat and both are equally likely but he's thinking it's the former.
No, Yancy, shut up, you don't understand.
When he does look at Mako, he half winces and nods at the same time because yeah, he does need to practice. He also needs to write four papers and studying for a multiple choice test in biology because he has to take general sciences too. He still hasn't started a single sentence on any of the papers. His laptop is open though. Does that count? To be fair, his pronunciation used to be a lot before she came into his life.
And maybe he messes up a word on purpose, just to make her laugh or frown at him, just so she can have a reason to talk to him.]
[ except she would, sort of. if she didn't have time for him, she would make time for him. which really goes to show just how smitten she is with him. it's gotten to the point where she feels a little lost without her daily dose of raleigh and that's going to be awful when she goes off with her aunt tamsin for winter break. ]
[Raleigh's not really looking forward to break either, for the exact same reason. And because he and Yancy are heading back to Alaska because Jaz said that Mom's getting sicker (even though Mom denies that) and that just-- he loves his family, he really does but he's not sure he's prepared emotionally for whatever is waiting there.]
Honestly? I'm going to be here for a while. [He gives his laptop a pointed look and sighs.]
We could do other stuff for a while? And then when it dies down, we can make fun of Yancy?
You should have started your papers earlier. [ if there's a hint of smugness in her voice, it's not there by intention. the amusement, however, is totally supposed to be there. mako may not exactly approve of the whole "wait until the very last minute and then stay up all night working" way of doing things, it's gotten to the point where it's more funny to watch raleigh scramble than annoying. ]
Working on other things first sounds good.
[ note that while she's not agreeing to making fun of yancy later, she's not saying no to it either. ]
[That look he'd been giving his computer slides over to her now, even though he's not actually upset her with like he'd been with his computer. His laptop doesn't have his papers magically on it and she's... perfect.
Yeah. That's what he just thought right there. Maybe he deserves whatever Yancy has planned for him with that spoon because he can't make his mouth form the words to ask her to dinner and how pathetic is that.]
I'll get my papers done in time. What do you even have left to do? You've been working like crazy these past few weeks.
[She might not agree to making fun of Yancy but if she thinks that Raleigh isn't going to mock his brother in Japanese, she is wrong.]

Only if you have time for that.
